Scrapbooks, 1835-1970 (bulk, 1898-1970).

Scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, invitations, correspondence, and illustrated greeting cards (ca. 1900s-1950s). Scrapbook (1835-1970, bulk 1898-1960s and undated) contains information on the marriage of Mattie Abney to Albert Sidney Hartzog (1909); A.S. Hartzog's tenure as mayor of Greenwood (1915-1923); visit of Marshal Ferdinand Foch to Greenwood (1921); journal entries and other materials documenting vacation trips to Florida and elsewhere in the United States and to Cuba (including Cuban ads, postcards, etc.); and documentation of Mattie Abney Hartzog's writings as a columnist for The Flower Grower magazine (1937-1942). This scrapbook (1835-1970) also includes legal document, 7 Dec. 1835, re sheriff's sale of 156 acres in Edgefield District to Joel Abney from the estate of William Richardson; other materials include ephemera re Columbia College, The Citadel, and other institutions and organizations; word puzzles; clippings re persons and events in Greenwood County, incl. activities of John Pope Abney, founder of Abney Textile Mills in Greenwood; writer Mary Simms Oliphant; and information re extended family and ancestors including essays re participation in American Revolution, Civil War, etc. Scrapbook (1936, 1957-1969 and undated) chiefly contains reviews, publicity, and correspondence re Mattie Abney Hartzog's 1957 book The Procession Moves On, an historical novel re five generations of a Southern family, ca. 1862-1957, said to be a fictionalized account based on letters, events, and folklore from her own family history.
